Kailua Church is a place where forgiveness is given and received; where the broken are being restored; and where encouragement is readily offered. We are ever becoming a Place of Grace.
We see our mission as that of sharing God's grace to anyone at anytime in anyway through the power of God's Spirit in us". We are A PLACE OF GRACE - a place of extending God's love and healing. Wherever we are, there we are sharing God's grace! We are a people that actively "serve" every hour of the day - at our workplace, in our schools, around our neighborhoods and in our homes. We come together as the "body of Christ" to exalt the Lord and to be equipped for service.
We invite everyone to follow Christ and to help us fulfill our purpose to know Christ, grow in Christ, serve Christ and share Christ. This means that as we walk through life together, we want everyone to discover who Christ is and how to live out our lives with this purpose.
So, what is a Nazarene anyway?
Jesus grew up in a town called Nazareth. There is a story in the Bible about two friends - one named Philip and the other Nathanael. Philip had already decided to follow Jesus and was trying to convince Nathanael to follow Jesus with him. In making his case he said, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael replied, “Nazareth! Can anything good come from Nazareth?” (John 1)
In that day, Nazareth was "on the wrong side of the tracks." It was a place where the poor lived, the impoverished, diseased, cast outs - the not good enoughs. This is why Nathanael responded this way, because what he knew of Nazareth was that there wasn't a lot of good there.
Jesus had a way of turning the tables - even down to the humble place where he took up residence. Jesus is the best thing that could happen to anyone, and he spent a lot of time trying to convince the "elite" in the world that the first shall be last and the last shall be first.
This is where we get our name - Nazarene. The Nazarene church began in 1908 reaching out to the poor, impoverished, diseased, cast outs - the not good enoughs. We took seriously what Jesus the Nazarene taught when he said, "I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ The King will reply, ‘Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.'" (Matthew 25)
Today, we are taking this calling as seriously as we ever have. There is no one undeserving of the love of Christ, and our church is on a mission to share this love with as many people as we can. You should join us!
