Consider Jesus

December 14, 2016  by Bob Miller

SCRIPTURE:  Hebrews 12:3-43 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.  In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood.

OBSERVATION:  When we become weary in our Christian walk because life seems tough or because we are receiving persecution and rejection we are to Consider the example our Lord set for us. He endured opposition from sinners, to the point that He suffered and died on a cross. He did not turn back, choose an easier path, or give up.  When we look to Him, we realize we are in good company and therefore we can remain steadfast.  We are to be reminded that in our temptations and struggle against sin, our testings have not resulted in losing our life or in shedding our blood, but Jesus’ stand against sin cost Him His life.

APPLICATION:  We should not be shocked when living for God produces hardship and kick-back from the world.  We have not chosen the ‘popular’ road. When we get discouraged in our walk with the Lord we are to set our eyes on Jesus. Remember His example which He set for us to follow. It may be difficult, but just as Jesus did not live for himself, so we are not to live for ourselves either. Our goal is not “happiness” but rather “Christ-likeness”.

PRAYER:   Lord, thank You for speaking to my heart today. I will set my eyes on You and not on ME!  Too easily I find myself considering the STATE that I am living in and let that determine my countenance. Instead Lord, I set my eyes on You to consider Your example for how to live through this day.

REFLECTION:  Take your focus off of yourself and fix it on Jesus!

NOT SO WITH YOU

November 25, 2016  by Pastor Bob Miller

SCRIPTURE:  Matthew 20: 25-28       25 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever wants to be first must be your slave— 28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

OBSERVATION:   The disciples were bickering for who would have the best positions in the Kingdom that Jesus was setting up.  Jesus says that this is the mindset of the Gentiles, who use their position of greatness to rule over those who are beneath them. But he says: “NOT SO WITH YOU”.  The kingdom that Jesus sets up has a whole different priority system. The greatest serves the least in His Kingdom. Jesus, the king of the Kingdom has set the standard. He came to serve and to lay down his life for others.

APPLICATION:  When we use our position and the authority given to us so that others will serve us – we are outside of God’s will for our life.  We are to use our position and gifts so that we can serve others.  When we behave as the world behaves and hunger for power inorder to be served we are not being like Jesus. We are standing outside the kingdom.

PRAYER:  Lord, may I remember that all you have given me, my position as Pastor, my resources, talents, money…it is to be used for others and not for myself.  May I not fall into the trap and pull of this world, but rather may I keep my eyes on You. Give me your heart, O God!

His Love Endures Forever

SCRIPTURE:  Psalm 136: 1-3 Oh give thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever. 2 Oh give thanks unto the God of gods; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever. 3 Oh give thanks unto the Lord of lords; For his lovingkindness endureth for ever

OBSERVATION:  Each affirmation about who God is and what He has done is followed by the exclamation;  For His lovingkindness endureth for ever!”  That God’s love never ends, that it flows out of Who He is into all that He does is hammered into our consciousness.  His love endures forever.  And it isn’t just his love…it is his lovingkindness.  Love is forever expressed. In all of His actions He shows His lovingkindness.

APPLICATION:   We can’t say it enough!  Our tendency is to forget that God’s lovingkindness reaches all the way to us both now and forever. In our forgetting we turn aside, we look for our answers elsewhere. It is good for us to Praise Him and to give Him Thanks every day, many times a day because His love is expressed to us many times every day…forever and ever. Never does He deal with us in any other way than out of His love. We should find ways to declare our gratefulness and give thanks to Him for His lovingkindness endures forever!

PRAYER:  Oh I praise You and give You thanks for your faithfulness and goodness shown to Me. I exalt You for You alone among all the gods that we make and serve hear and answer our prayers. Your dealings with us is always out of Your love for us. You treat me in ways that I don’t deserve. You give me strength that I don’t have, fill me with Your love so that I may love others and so that Your love may be felt among those around me.  May I pass on the love that you loved me with.  I give thanks to You oh Lord God Almighty Jehovah whose love endures forever.

REFLECTION:  There is never a day when our Lord fails to express His love towards me!
